Week Two Reading-Data Driven Decision Making

What are your thoughts after reading this article? Was there anything that stood out to you?

  1. I think that this article has some good ideas such as providing different exercises catering towards different needs and learning styles expressed by students. I feel like this learning management system would really provide the best help in getting students to comprehend materials in anyway they could, although as the article states this would be very time consuming for the teacher. Already teachers are strapped for time, imagine having to create custom tests and lesson plans to cater to every students needs, and then having to grade all of these separate tests. This would prove to be very difficult in a large classroom.

  2. I think the idea behind data driven decision making makes a lot of sense, however would be very difficult to implement timely and efficiently. It sounds like it would be very difficult for teachers to find the extra time for something as involved as this process seams it would be. I believe that throughout the year teachers learn who their students are, and what their capabilities are for the most part. This allows them to differentiate learning in their own way to students.

  3. On the whole there is much to consider from this article. In one respect I understand the importance and appreciate how data can be effectively used in diagnosing issues with students. That is why having a management system that can provide quickly updated categorized results can be very useful. However I have to agree with some of the previous sentiments that the ideal situation of data allowing for complete differentiation in learning is somewhat unattainable, primarily due to time and manpower restraints. However I suppose having better, more accurate and timely data management does provide a good opportunity to help achieve this ideal situation at least to some degree.

  4. I think that this article touches upon an important topic that has to do with determining how teachers will instruct their students, based on the assistance of the learning management system. I also found this system to be worthy and beneficial to students because it gathers their information and displays their results, whether it be from tests, quizzes etc and since it’s hard to keep up with those who are falling behind in class teachers will be sent an alert informing of them of certain students who are having difficulties in particular areas. It’s a great way to determine what items are giving students trouble and perhaps change the style of teaching or exercises for learning.

  5. The article talks about how gathering data and statistics can be used to help create a better learning enviornment. The problem with this though seems to really be multifold as it includes accuracy of the data as well as how quickly the data can be gathered. If the data is not gathered and sorted in a quick time period it could very well lose its effectiveness. There are also other factors that could be affecting the data itself inculding what might be going on outstide of the classroom that is beyond the control of the teacher. While having the data can always help the teacher to try and think about things in a different way it is by no means a perfect measure of what is happening in the classroom.

  6. The article touched on more opportunities to bring technology into the classroom. What stood out was the chart and the availability to track the students progress and even be able to go straight to the answers which they got wrong on the test. This can be very effective because now you can learn your students better and also see the strengths and weaknesses to make them a better student and your self a better teacher. The only concern I would have with all this technology is how fast it is updated and what is good today may not be good tomorrow, so how is it possible to keep up with everything.

  7. This article talks about a way to use technology to keep track of your students grades, and actually give meaning to them. It talks about how you can see what the students average is in a subject matter to what the classes average is, and then you can take this data and see where you can help your students more. While I feel that this is a great idea, I still feel that it will be a little time consuming on the part of the teacher. I also feel that I will have to agree with what Bill said that there are other factors that we have to take into account, for example things that happen outside of your classroom, things that you have no control over. I do feel that one day this will be attainable, especially with the advances in technology.

I think that the most important topic that stands out is how the teachers will instruct their students. I think it is a great way to find out where students weakness are and the style of that students learning ability. Athlough this system helps in these areas isn't it our job as teachers as the year progresses to figure out how each student learns and to use mutliple teaching strategies. Also it would be time consuming. I feel that I would not need to rely on a system to display results from tests etc. You could easily desingnate 5 mins to showing a graph on how the avg test or quiz scores have dropped or increased. It is a cool new tool that I would maybe try out and see but again I prefer not to at the moment. I agree with Kat that if might be hard to find the time to do this data driven collection system.

  9. In response to the article i feel that using technolgy for grading could be a good idea as long as all the outside factors can be added in somehow. i agree with bill and ryan with the point that putting grades together for each student this way could be time consuming and the outside factors are important to the grading process. if there was someway to get this concept brought together with the data then this could work in the future if it was well thought out.

  10. I thought the technology mentioned in the article is another good tool to help the educational process in schools. Being able to better track student progression and their strengths and weaknesses can help greatly. It would allow teachers to provide students with individual needs to help them improve upon. I also liked how the tools displayed made visuals for the teacher and others to see. Also if I liked how if many teachers in a district had the program they could easily share visual information and point out areas of weakness that students need help with. One thing that stood out to me as a weakness in my opinion was how the technology would be used for open ended questions or answers that have no definite answer. Students could struggle in this area and the technology does not seem to have a definite way to point it out. Overall I think this could be an effective tool in the classroom.

  11. I think that using learning management systems allows teachers and other administrators to have access to data that allows them to expand their own thoughts and allow them to focus in on a particular area a student may be struggling in. I have never heard of learning management systems before, and think that they have great potential. The only thought that makes me hesitant to using these systems is that it becomes crucial for teachers to know how to precisely use these tools and how to interpret results. It is crucial for administrators and teachers to know how to precisely interpret the data so that it is not used incorrectly. One concept that did stand out as I was reading this is how time efficient these systems are and how these learning management systems are able to group different sets of data together. If these systems were not available the thought of organizing all of this data by hand seems daunting. The systems described in the article also seem to offer forth different exercises that the teachers can use in order to aid there students.

  12. I feel that at the time using technology to grade the students is going to be something that once they have more technology out for it will be extremely helpful. I agree with what most people have said about how it will be good to show the students how they are doing in the class, which would be good to show them what they need to improve on to do better in the class. In the future when technology advances again, I'm sure that using this technology will be very useful for the students. At this time however it is something that would take to much time, which teachers do not have enough of.
