Week Four Voicthread Discussion

After reading about Voicethread on www.classroom20.com explain two ways you could use voicethread in the classroom.

  1. Two great ways to use this technology that I noticed from the voicethread involved using it in an art class to add words to pictures so that students can look at slides for art history class and here what the teacher is saying about them at the same time.

Another use of voicethread technology is that it allows students to post coversations in a foriegn language and the teacher to hear how they are saying the words. This allows for more direct feedback and in a foriegn language it is really important to make sure that the words they are speaking are the right words.

  2. One way that I found interesting is using voicethread for something like digital storytelling. In a history classroom this could be very easily applied in an activity where students can research, write and then produce a narrative about a specific person or event for example. This could be useful as it is not a traditional written assignment as you can combine this with imagery, sound, voiceover, etc.

The second way I though this could be useful is the creation of the voicethread app for ipad and the iphone. In the school I'm doing field work in right now, we have a couple of carts with ipads so we could actually do something like the aforementioned activity without having to move to the computer lab or having kids do them at home.

  3. One way that I found that voicethread would benefit students in the classroom is to put images to concepts. I feel that there are many different types of learners, and sometimes students do not learn as much by just lecture. This would help out those students that are more visual.

Another way I thought voicethread would be beneficial to students is simply by their teachers being a part of this. Teachers can go on here and get many different ideas from colleagues in which they can bring back into the classroom.

  4. The first way I found for using voicethread in the classroom was to exchange information among students about a topic being taught. The students can interact with each other and exchange useful information and things they found on a topic being discussed in the classroom. I really liked how they can use speech and multiple visuals to share and spread information. One post mentioned how the students were even able to collaborate with students from other classrooms which I think is an excellent use and idea.

A second use for voicethread in the classroom is a creative way for students to create projects. Using voicethread will allow them to create an interactive project that is more fun and involving than some other projects. It can also allow students to show their projects to many more people and allow them to provide constructive criticism.

  5. One use I saw for using voice thread is to put up lectures or presentations that would have been made in class online on the voice thread and then have the students watch it and ask questions there, saving time in class.

Another use I saw was for the STUDENTS to put their projects and presentations online and have the peers comment on it, so then presentations don't have to be made in class and can save time in class.

Voicethread can become beneficial to students in and outside of the classroom. This web-based application allows teachers to create a shared presentation of images, documents, and videos in which students can comment on by text, voice, audio file, or video. I would use Voicethread in order to facilitate communication among students at different geographic locations, as well as introduce content and create engaging team projects that can be peer reviewed.

One way that I found voicethread to be beneficial is students using Premier which is a talking word processor. It frees up the teacher and paper.

Another way I though voicethread was benficial is using skype. I think that it would be cool to interact with other classes and/or pen pals through skype. Class challenges/problems could be intergrated here.

  8. Through the VoiceThread blogs I found an interesting comment that caught my eye. One individual was trying to start a VoiceThread project entitled “Show off your School!” This project consisted of students taking pictures, making comments and sharing them with other schools. The hope was for other schools to get involved and make the project go viral and incorporate not just schools around the country but worldwide so students can learn about different schools and there environments. I thought this project was interesting because not only did it let students in the class/school share their favorite features of the school with each other but it allows them to interact with students nation/worldwide. This specific project would be a great way to foster school pride or show which types of events where going on at school that month. I also found a separate comment that discussed digital storytelling. This particular teacher’s school was holding a contest to see who can create storybooks and then share them via Skype or Voicethread. The competition was to see who can hold the most story times with digital books. This made me think that VoiceThread would not only be useful for interacting with different schools/students but it is also a tool in which students can set-up and review material by.

  9. It would be a good idea to use this technology to add words to diagrams in a health education class on a slide show. the students will be able to look at pictures of the human body, its organs and muscles. It could also show the benefits of exercise or effects of doing drugs and learn from what the teacher will get to point out and explain to the whole class. Also it could help use will students in our classes that don't speak English very well or at all, helping communication with all types of learners.

  10. Physical Education could benefit from voicethreads on slideshows or to explain pictures. For example if you were breaking down a golf swing or a baseball swing you could have step by step cues to have the students think about as they perform the skill. I also like what Tim wrote about using it in health class. It is beneficial to hear something and see it at the same time and this would be a good way to study and learn. Also adding a voicethread would make the students have to listen more intently if you were to post questions for them to answer after they heard and saw the pictures or videos.

  11. PE may benefit from voicethreads to help give more explain on an activity that is being taught in class. If you have a voicethread explaining step by step the skill that you are teaching it is a great thing for the kids to have. I agree with Eric that if you add questions to the for them to answer from the voicethread then they will listen better.

  12. Voice-threads can definitely help Physical Education by using different slideshows and explaining different things that are happening in each photo. For example if you look at the golf swing you could actually break down the entire swing and have the voice thread playing in the back round describing what they should be doing in each position. I agree with alan that using it for skype would be another good tool for the students to learn.
